- 친환경 섬유 개발, 신재생에너지 리파이너리 구축 등 공동연구 MOU 체결
지난 6월 30일, 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스(총장 한태준)와 (주)형지글로벌(대표이사 부회장 최준호)이 해양 기반 친환경 섬유 개발 및 신재생에너지 리파이너리 구축 협력 사업을 위한 해조류 바이오섬유 공동개발연구소를 설립했다.
겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스에서 진행된 이번 행사는 한태준 총장, 최준호 부회장, 브루노 얀스(Bruno Jans) 주한 벨기에 대사, 박주봉 인천상공회의소 회장, 최열 환경재단 이사장 그리고 최병오 한국섬유산업연합회장 등 핵심 관계자와 각계 인사들이 참석한 가운데 진행됐으며, 참석자들은 축사를 통해 이번 공동개발연구소 설립이 지속 가능한 미래를 향한 중요한 전환점이 될 것이라는 기대를 나타냈다.
행사는 상호 협력을 위한 업무협약(MOU) 체결과 공동개발연구소 설립을 기념하는 현판식 순으로 진행됐다. 협약의 내용은 ▲해양 기반 친환경 섬유 개발, ▲신재생에너지 리파이너리 구축, ▲친환경 섬유의 상업적 패션 소재화, 그리고 ▲인천 지역 일자리 창출 등으로 구성됐다.
양측은 공동개발연구소를 거점으로 해조류를 활용한 바이오 섬유 소재 개발, 친환경 공정 시스템, 그리고 ESG(환경·사회·지배구조) 기반 섬유 브랜드화 등 다양한 프로젝트를 진행할 예정이다. 연구소 운영 총괄은 박지혜 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 교수(환경공학) 겸 마린유겐트 한국분소 책임 관리자가 담당하며, 3년간 10억 원 규모의 민간 투자와 36억 원 규모의 공공 재정 연계를 병행할 예정이다. 연구진은 선행 연구부터 시제품 제작까지 모든 과정을 아우르며, 강화·옹진 일대 해역 실증 단계도 거칠 예정이다.
특히 파래와 다시마에서 유래한 셀룰로오스 및 알지네이트 소재는 기존 합성섬유를 대체할 지속 가능한 대안 소재로 평가되며, 해조류 기반 바이오 섬유 소재 개발의 청사진을 제시할 전망이다.
한태준 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 총장은 “형지는 글로벌 인재 육성을 위한 장학금 전달 등 학교와 긴밀한 협력을 유지해 온 만큼, 이번 공동개발연구의 뚜렷한 성과를 달성하기 위한 최고의 파트너”라며 “겐트대의 해양생명공학 역량과 형지의 산업화 노하우가 결합된 이번 연구소는 산·학·연 협력과 해양 바이오 융복합 연구의 대표 사례가 될 것이다.”라고 밝혔다.

MOU signed for joint research on eco-friendly fiber development and renewable energy refinery construction
On June 30, Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC, Taejun Han, Prof. Dr. Campus President) and Hyungji Global Co., Ltd. (Junho Choi, Vice Chairman & CEO) established a Joint Research Institute for Seaweed Biofibers to collaborate on the development of marine-based eco-friendly fibers and the construction of a renewable energy refinery.
The event, held at Ghent University Global Campus, was attended by key stakeholders and distinguished guests including Taejun Han Prof. Dr. Campus President, Vice Chairman Junho Choi, H.E. Bruno Jans, Belgian Ambassador to Korea, Joobong Park, Chairman of the Incheon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yeol Choi, Chairman of the Korea Green Foundation, and Byungoh Choi, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Textile Industries. In congratulatory remarks, the participants expressed high expectations that the establishment of the joint research institute would mark an important turning point toward a sustainable future.
The event included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation and a plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the establishment of the research institute. The MOU covers the following areas: ▲development of marine-based eco-friendly fibers, ▲construction of a renewable energy refinery, ▲commercialization of eco-friendly fibers as fashion materials, and ▲job creation in the Incheon region.
The two parties will carry out various projects through the joint research institute, including the development of biofiber materials using seaweed, eco-friendly processing systems, and ESG-based branding of textile products. The institute will be led by Jihae Park, Prof. Dr. at Ghent University Global Campus(Environmental Technology), who also serves as the Leader of the Korean branch of Marine@UGent. A total investment of KRW 1 billion from the private sector and KRW 3.6 billion in public funding is planned over the next three years. The research team will cover the entire process from preliminary studies to prototype production and conduct pilot demonstrations in the waters around Ganghwa and Ongjin.
In particular, cellulose and alginate materials derived from green algae and kelp are being evaluated as sustainable alternatives to conventional synthetic fibers, offering a promising blueprint for the development of seaweed-based biofibers.

Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC), located in Songdo, Incheon, is an overseas extension of Belgium’s Ghent University, globally renowned for its excellence in life sciences and biotechnology. Backed by advanced research infrastructure, GUGC actively engages in interdisciplinary research. In particular, since the launch of its Marine Convergence Research Center “Marine@UGent Korea” in August last year, the campus has been strengthening its role as a global research hub in marine studies.

Hyungji Global began with the French-origin golf wear brand Castelbajac and is evolving into a comprehensive fashion company preparing to expand globally. The company is actively entering overseas markets, particularly in China, and pursuing eco-friendly management practices, including the development of sustainable fiber materials and recycling of discarded clothing.
