페트라 드 수터 벨기에 겐트대 총장 “겐트대의 과학 연구 역량…송도 바이오와 연결할 것”

페트라 드 수터(Petra De Sutter) 벨기에 겐트대 총장은 최근 인천 송도국제도시 겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스 졸업식 참석 등을 위해 방한했다. 이번이 4번째 방문이라는 그는 “한국 학생들의 열정은 인상적이다. 사람들도 매우 친절하고 따뜻해 송도에 오는 것이 즐겁다”며 소감을 전했다.
본교와 글로벌캠퍼스 간 관계에 대해서도 만족감을 나타냈다. 두 기관 간 원활한 관계를 이어갈 수 있는 배경으로는 '상호 존중'을 꼽았다.
드 수터 총장은 “유럽과 한국은 생각하고 행동하는 방식이 다른 만큼 서로의 문화적 차이를 이해하고 존중하는 것이 중요하다”며 “한태준 총장은 우리의 사고방식과 일하는 방식을 잘 이해하고 있고, 그런 점에서 서로 잘 맞는다”고 덧붙였다.
드 수터 총장은 글로벌캠퍼스의 다음 성장 단계로 대학원 설립을 가장 먼저 꼽았다.
그는 “석사과정 개설을 통해 학부 1학년부터 박사과정까지 이어갈 수 있는 체계를 만드는 것이 중요하다”며 “6∼12개월 안에 대학원 설립 계획을 구체화할 방침”이라고 밝혔다.
드 수터 총장은 학부 교육과정 확대 가능성도 열어뒀다. 기존 생명공학을 중심으로 약학과 수의학, 보건과학 등과 연계한 교육과정을 검토할 수 있다는 구상이다.
연구 성과를 지역 산업과 연결하는 것도 주요 목표로 제시했다. 특허와 지식재산권, 스핀오프 기업 창출 등을 통해 인천·송도의 바이오산업 생태계와 연계를 강화하겠다는 것이다.
한·벨기에 수교 125주년을 맞아 양국을 잇는 글로벌캠퍼스의 역할도 강조했다. 겐트대는 9월 중순 글로벌캠퍼스에서 벨기에 플랑드르 지역 파트너들과 학계·정부·산업계가 참여하는 네트워킹 행사를 열 예정이다.
드 수터 총장은 “겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스가 양국 관계를 실질적인 협력으로 이어주는 장소가 되길 바란다”며 “수교 125주년을 과거를 돌아보는 데 그치지 않고, 앞으로 새로운 연결을 만들어가는 계기로 삼고 싶다”고 기대했다.
마지막으로 드 수터 총장은 겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스가 인천과 한국 사회에 성공적으로 뿌리내린 대학으로 기억되길 바랐다.
그는 “인천 지역 사회와 협력하고 융화되는 것이 가장 큰 목표”라며 “서로 다른 생각과 문화, 행동 방식을 이해하고 존중한다면 더 많은 가능성이 열릴 수 있다”고 말했다.

"Expanding the research capabilities of Ghent University Global Campus to connect with the bio and life sciences industry ecosystem in Incheon and Songdo is the next step we must take."
Petra De Sutter, Rector of Ghent University in Belgium, recently visited South Korea to attend the graduation ceremony at Ghent University Global Campus in Songdo International City, Incheon. Noting this as her fourth visit, she expressed her thoughts, saying, "The passion of Korean students is impressive. The people are also very kind and warm, making it a joy to come to Songdo."
She also expressed satisfaction with the relationship between the home campus and the global campus. She cited 'mutual respect' as the background for maintaining a smooth relationship between the two institutions.
Rector De Sutter added, "As Europe and Korea have different ways of thinking and acting, it is important to understand and respect each other's cultural differences," and "President Han Tae-joon understands our mindset and working methods well, and in that regard, we are a good match."
Rector De Sutter pointed to the establishment of a graduate school as the immediate next stage of growth for the global campus.
She stated, "It is important to create a system that can run from the first year of undergraduate studies through to a doctoral program by opening master's courses," and added, "We plan to materialize the graduate school establishment plan within 6 to 12 months."
Rector De Sutter also left open the possibility of expanding the undergraduate curriculum. The idea is that educational programs linked to pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and health sciences could be considered, building on the existing biotechnology foundation.
Connecting research achievements with local industries was also presented as a major goal. The intention is to strengthen ties with the bio-industry ecosystem in Incheon and Songdo through patents, intellectual property rights, and the creation of spin-off companies.
In celebration of the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Belgium, the role of the global campus in connecting the two countries was also emphasized. Ghent University plans to hold a networking event at the global campus in mid-September, involving partners from the Flanders region of Belgium, along with academia, government, and industry.
Rector De Sutter expressed her expectations, saying, "I hope Ghent University Global Campus becomes a place that leads bilateral relations into practical cooperation," and "I want to use the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations not just to look back at the past, but as an opportunity to create new connections moving forward."
Lastly, Rector De Sutter hoped that Ghent University Global Campus would be remembered as a university that has successfully taken root in Incheon and Korean society.
She said, "Cooperating and integrating with the local community in Incheon is the biggest goal," and "If we understand and respect our different thoughts, cultures, and behaviors, many more possibilities can open up."
