글로벌 석학들과 '습지·철새 보호, 기후회복' 논의…자연에서 기후위기 해법 찾다

겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스와 마린유겐트 코리아(Marine@UGent Korea)가 14일, 송도 G타워에서 “연안습지 생태계, 철새 이동 경로 보전 및 기후회복력”을 주제로 국제 세미나를 개최했다.
이번 세미나는 '동아시아-대양주 철새 이동 경로 파트너십(EAAFP)'의 창립 20주년 기념행사의 위성 세미나로 개최됐으며, ‘철새이동경로 대학연합(FUA)’과 ‘EAAFP’가 공동 주관했다.
행사는 박지혜 마린유겐트 코리아 한국 대표(겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 환경공학과 교수)가 좌장을 맡아 진행했으며, 한국을 비롯해 중국, 일본, 태국, 방글라데시, 인도네시아 등 다양한 국가의 글로벌 석학들이 다수 참석해 연구 결과를 공유하고 습지·철새 보호와 기후위기 해결을 위한 심도 있는 논의가 오갔다.
EAAFP의 제니퍼 조지(Jennifer George) 최고책임자와 장지창(Zhang Zhiqiang) 베이징임업대학교 부총장의 축사에 이어 기조연설이 진행됐다. 한태준 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 총장은 '글로벌 갯벌 연대: 과학·자연·사람·평화를 잇다 – 황해에서 세계로'를 주제로 발표했으며, 레이광춘(Lei Guangchun) FUA 의장은 ‘중국과 EAAFP: 창립 파트너십에서 철새 이동 경로 과학 이니셔티브로’주제로 발표했다. 이어 시나노 다쿠로(Shinano Takuro) 홋카이도대학 교수, 하비본 나헤르(Habibon Naher) 방글라데시 자간나스대학교 교수, 와타리 다카히로(Watari Takahiro) 나가오카기술과학대학 교수, 최계운 인천연구원장, 리나 라흐마와티(Rina Rachmawati) 인도네시아 브라위자야대학교 박사, 그리고 피야칸 티어티숩(Piyakarn Teartisup) 태국 마히돈대학교 교수 등이 연사로 나서 각국의 연구 성과와 정책 사례를 공유했다.
한태준 총장은 “동아시아-대양주 철새 이동 경로의 한복판인 인천에서 13개국, 22개 대학으로 구성된 ‘철새이동경로 대학연합(FUA)’ 전문가들이 한데 모여 국제 세미나를 성공적으로 개최한 것은 매우 의미가 크다”라며, “이번 세미나가 습지·철새 보호와 자연 기반의 기후위기 해법을 찾는데 실질적인 계기가 되었길 기대한다”라고 전했다.
박지혜 교수는 “이번 세미나는 동아시아-대양주 철새 이동 경로를 따라 활동하는 연구자와 대학, 협력기관이 한자리에 모여 연안습지 보전, 철새 이동 경로, 기후회복력, 블루카본 분야의 협력 방안을 논의하기 위해 마련됐다”며, “국제 공동연구와 신규 협력을 확대하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “이번 세미나의 성과는 오는 11월 중국 푸저우에서 열리는 제2회 EAAFP 과학 심포지엄 및 FUA 총회에서도 이어질 예정”이라고 덧붙였다.
겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스와 마린유겐트 코리아는 이번 국제 세미나의 성과를 바탕으로 공동연구와 협력 강화 등 글로벌 지식을 하나로 잇는 다리 역할을 하기 위해 다양한 노력을 이어갈 예정이다. //끝//

Ghent University Global Campus and Marine@UGent Korea held an international seminar titled "Coastal Wetland Ecosystems, Flyway Conservation & Climate Resilience" on July 14 at G-Tower in Songdo, Incheon.
The seminar was held as a satellite event marking the 20th anniversary of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP), and was co-organized by the Flyway University Alliance (FUA) and the EAAFP Secretariat.
The event was chaired by Prof. Jihae Park, Korea Representative of Marine@UGent Korea and Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Ghent University Global Campus. Leading scholars from Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and other countries attended to share their research findings, engaging in in-depth discussions on wetland and flyway conservation and solutions to the climate crisis.
Following congratulatory remarks by Ms. Jennifer George, Chief Executive of the EAAFP Secretariat, and Prof. ZHANG Zhiqiang, Vice President of Beijing Forestry University, keynote presentations followed. Prof. Taejun Han, Campus President of Ghent University Global Campus, presented on "The Global Tidal Flat Alliance: Connecting Science, Nature, People, and Peace — From the Yellow Sea to the World," while Prof. Lei Guangchun, Chair of the FUA, presented on "China and the EAAFP: From a Founding Partnership to a Flyway Science Initiative."
They were followed by presentations from Prof. Takuro Shinano of Hokkaido University; Prof. Habibon Naher of Jagannath University, Bangladesh; Prof. Takahiro Watari of Nagaoka University of Technology; Dr. Gyewoon Choi, President of The Incheon Institute; Dr. Rina Rachmawati of Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia; and Prof. Piyakarn Teartisup of Mahidol University, Thailand, who each shared research findings and policy cases from their respective countries.
Prof. Taejun Han, Campus President remarked, "It is highly significant that experts from the Flyway University Alliance (FUA) — comprising 22 universities across 13 countries — successfully gathered in Incheon, at the heart of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, to hold this international seminar." He added, "I hope this seminar serves as a meaningful step toward finding nature-based solutions to protect wetlands and migratory birds and address the climate crisis."
Prof. Jihae Park said, "This seminar was organized to bring together researchers, universities, and partner institutions working along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway to discuss cooperation on coastal wetland conservation, flyway protection, climate resilience, and blue carbon." She added, "We hope it becomes an opportunity to expand international joint research and new partnerships," noting that "the outcomes of this seminar will carry forward to the 2nd EAAFP Scientific Symposium and FUA General Assembly, to be held this November in Fuzhou, China."
Ghent University Global Campus and Marine@UGent Korea plan to continue their efforts to serve as a bridge connecting global knowledge through joint research and expanded cooperation, building on the outcomes of this international seminar. //End//
