Full-time Research and Teaching Assistant (Ph.D. student) in Plant Biotechnology Research Center (RC1) of Ghent University Global Campus, Korea
 Ghent University Global Campus, Korea (GUGC-K) has a vacancy for a position of PhD student as a Teaching and Research Assistant starting from 5th of January 2026 in the Plant Biotechnology Research Center. It concerns a full-time position in support of the teaching and research activities of the research center, renewable subject to evaluation. Successful candidate will receive a PhD degree from Ghent University in Belgium (WE09, Department of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics).

  • Vacancy type: Assistant Academic Personnel (AAP) Ghent University Global Campus, Korea (GUGC-K) has a vacancy for a position of research (50%) and Teaching (50%) assistant. It concerns a temporary full-time position for a maximum period of 6 years.
 
Profile of the Candidate
  • You hold a Master of Science degree with strong focus on plant biology / plant molecular biology. If you do not hold a MSc from a Korean University, you must have proof of 3 years post-MSc working experience. Those international candidates who are residing in Korea with the following visa types are exempted from the 3-year work experience condition; F-4 (foreign national with Korean ancestral roots), F-6 (spouse visa), F-2 (resident visa/ job seeking visa).
  • You have a good knowledge on biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
  • You have good knowledge and skills regarding plant biology, and you feel comfortable with wet-lab experiments.
  • Educational experience and participation on extra-curriculum training (e.g., conference) is recommended.
  • You have strong didactic, communicative skills and a large interest in providing and supporting academic education.
  • You have an excellent academic track record, an excellent command of English (a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 85 or an IELTS score of 6.5), and good academic writing and presentation skills.
  • You are highly motivated to conduct scientific research in preparation of obtaining a PhD degree in the area of plant molecular biology.
  • You have an independent research and strong self-learning ability; a creative and inquisitive attitude is a must.
  • You are willing to participate in the educational programs in GUGC.
 Job Description
  • You design and perform high-quality scientific research in the field of plant molecular biology.
  • You publish your research results in peer-reviewed international journals and actively participate in (inter)national conferences.
  • You assist a professor at GUGC Plant Biotechnology Research Center to further develop and expand the research projects.
  • You assist the Research Center with teaching practical parts of undergraduate courses (General Biology, Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, Plant Physiology, and Integrated Practicum 1, including wet-and dry-lab practical exercises).
  • You assist with grading, examinations, and other educational duties of the research center.
 
GUGC-K is the first campus of Ghent University outside Belgium. This campus is located in Incheon, South- Korea. GUGC-K integrates educational and research facilities in a single building. Ghent University has the ambition to organize a first-rate, truly European education in Asia and to develop excellent research in the fields of Molecular biotechnology, Environmental and Food technology. The terms of employment at GUGC-K are comparable to those at the campus in Ghent. Upon selection, candidates who require a visa will apply for an E-3 (Researcher) visa in Korea. Student accommodation and one round-trip travel ticket between the home country and GUGC-K will be provided for international employees (E-3 visa holders). International candidates who already hold other visa types in Korea (such as F-2, F-4, or F-6) are also eligible to apply for this position. The initial employment contract is for two (2) years and may be extended upon positive evaluation, allowing promising scientists to continue their research with the ultimate objective of pursuing a Ph.D. Co-supervision is foreseen from the Ghent University home campus.
