Ghent University Global Campus (President Taejun Han) and the Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute (Director Jinseong Kim) announced on the 17th that they have signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Joint Research on the Utilization of West Coast Tidal Flats and Marine Bio-Convergence."
The signing ceremony was held at the main conference room of Ghent University Global Campus, attended by President Han Taejun, Director Kim Jinseong, and working-level researchers, with the purpose of strengthening research cooperation for the development of marine and fisheries industries and new marine sectors in the Incheon area.
The contents of the agreement include ▲cooperation in mutually necessary research and commercialization, ▲joint use of facilities, equipment, and research materials required for research activities, and ▲student internships for nurturing talent.
In particular, the two institutions will join forces to enhance collaboration on ▲the use and conservation of West Coast tidal flats, ▲marine environment and biotechnology, ▲marine R&D and the fostering of new industries, and ▲marine carbon neutrality (blue carbon) using microalgae and seaweed, aiming to produce tangible research results linked to national-level tasks.
Taejun Han, President of Ghent University Global Campus, stated, “The West Coast tidal flats, inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2021, are an ecological treasure with immense research value in terms of biodiversity, carbon absorption, and purification functions,” and added, “Through this agreement, we will work closely with the Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute to produce substantial and leading research outcomes in the marine bio sector.”
Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC), located in Songdo, Incheon, is an overseas extension campus of Belgium’s Ghent University, which is renowned worldwide in the fields of life science and biotechnology. With its advanced research infrastructure, GUGC is actively pursuing interdisciplinary research. In particular, it continues to strengthen its status as a global research hub in the marine field through its marine convergence research institute ‘Marine@UGent Korea’, which was launched in August last year.
Jinseong Kim, Director of the Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute, said, “Through cooperation in marine research technology between Europe and Korea, we will proactively respond to future environmental and industrial changes and do our best to establish a new foundation for marine industry research in Incheon.”
