Full-Time Research & Teaching Assistant, PhD Candidate – Ghent University Global Campus

Degree: Master in Chemistry and/or Chemical Engineering

Contract:  1 year fixed-term contract, renewable upon evaluation (Max. 4 years)

Scientific Supervisor: Prof. dr. ir. Di Wu
(Di Wu’s group (http://orcid.org/0000-0003-4293-5034) is hiring 1~2 TA/PhD who has strong Environmental Organic Chemistry and/or Membrane Research background, for pursuing two themes of research works – Th1, Water-Energy Synergy for desalination or potable water reuse (e.g. ceramic membrane, solar desalination, micropollutants transformation); Th2, Green chemistry for waste(water) valorization (e.g. algae research, electrochemical synthesis, advanced anaerobic biotechnology and downstream extraction of chemicals). The candidate will conduct research under the BOF research fund for advancing saline waste/ water technology...(see: https://research.ugent.be/web/person/di-wu-0/projects/en), and synergetically collaborate with a large-scale cross institutional collaboration research team, among UGent-TUDelft-HKUST (see: https://wwrf.hkust.edu.hk/).
 
 
 
Job Position
Ghent University Global Campus, South Korea, has a vacancy for a Research & Teaching Assistant, PhD Candidate in the Center of Environmental and Energy Research (CEER) at Ghent University Global Campus, starting from 1 Aug 2022 (open to negotiation). The request(s) and standard(s) for the PhD in GUGC is equivalent to Ghent University home campus. It concerns a 1-year full-time position for a renewable period of maximum of 4 years.
 
The candidate will mainly work at the Center of Environmental and Energy Research (CEER) of the Ghent University Global Campus in Korea. However, s/he will also work with a co-supervisor at the home campus CAPTURE (https://capture-resources.be/) in Ghent, Belgium.
 

Job Qualification (Profile of the Candidate)
  1. Hold, or expect to hold, by 30 April 2022 (negotiable), an Master degree in one of the following disciplines: Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  2. Have solid and relevant lab experimental experiences in the aforementioned research area; have publication(s) in environmental science and technologies is a plus.
  3. Have an excellent command of English (e.g. a minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT test or 6.5 IELTS test), and good academic writing and presentation skills.
  4. At least 3 years working experience for obtaining an entry visa to South Korea (not required for Master student with Korean nationals or the candidate obtained Master in South Korea)
  5. Team spirit and inquisitive, self-motive attitude as well as independent learning/research ability are essential; can take leadership among team members.
 
Job Description
  1. To conduct research in the area of Environmental Organic Chemistry or Membrane research, for examples i) Electrochemical sysnthesis (CO2 conversion), ii) Conversting algae/biomass to valuable chemicals, iii) Micropollutants removal and iv) desalination and/or potable water reuse.
  2. The detailed PhD training plan will be explored upon the background and interests of the individual candidate;
  3. To finalize the doctoral thesis within the given period with good publications;
  4. To assist his/her supervisors with tasks in ongoing and future R&D projects;
  5. Assist her/his supervisor(s) in teaching undergraduate courses (Organic chemistry and/or Green Chemistry) and training bachelor student internship and Master students at Ghent University Global Campus, South Korea. The workload of teaching will be about 30%.

Selection Process

Compensation & Benefits for the candidate selected

1. Basic Term of the Contract
    - 1 year-contract term (renewable upon committee’s evaluation, Max. 4 years)

2. Salary-starts from Annual Base Salary of 27,375,000 KRW (Monthly Salary of 2,281,250 KRW, Gross)
    - Bonuses-Additional two bonuses in June (92% of monthly salary) and December (100% monthly salary)

3. Housing unit or Housing Allowance
    - A single unit of Dormitory operated by Incheon Global Campus (IGC) is provided for foreigners.
      If the selected candidate is a permanent resident holder or has a Korean nationality, the housing unit shall not be provided by IGC, but the Housing Allowance of 725,000 KRW monthly.

4. Two round-tickets to Hometown (For foreigners only)
    - The selected candidate with foreign nationality, shall have two round-tickets to Home town per year

5. Private Health Insurances
    - Marsh private health insurance provided, including basic medical reimbursements

6. Extensive annual paid leave and holidays
    - The selected candidate shall have 35 days paid annual leave per year.
    - Additional holiday from Christmas (Dec 25) to New Year (Jan 1). "End"
