Centre for Green Chemistry and Environmental Biotechnology (GREAT), formerly known as Center for Environmental and Energy Research (CEER) is one of the five existing research centers of GUGC. It was established in 2015 with the aim to deliver scientific outcomes that will have a real impact on consolidation of environmental issues, themes, and topics, and to do this under one umbrella to highlight their interconnectedness and interdisciplinary nature.
GREAT targets to pioneer at green chemistry and environmental technology to tackle the grand challenges in environmental remediation and sustainable development. In the last decade GREAT was well-equipped with various state-of-the-art instruments for environmental and materials science research, published more than 300 papers in prestigious scientific journal including NATURE and received various national and international Awards. Moreover, GREAT has been obtaining different funding support for research (e.g. NRF, KEITI, NERI, BOF, FWO, Horizon, etc.), and built strong collaborations with Korean and international top universities.

Ghent University Global Campus, South Korea, has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Reseacher (with Teaching Duties) in Environmental Technologies at the Centre for Green Chemistry and Environmental Biotechnology (GREAT) starting from May 1, 2025 (open to negotiations). The request(s) and standard(s) for the PostDoc at GUGC are equivalent to the Ghent University, Belgium. The terms of employment at GUGC are also comparable to those at the campus in Ghent, Belgium. However, free guesthouse accommodation and a yearly travel budget are foreseen. GUGC is an equal opportunities employer.
As the PostDoc candidate is supposed to spend (maximal) 30% of his/her time in teaching activities pertaining to undergraduate courses that include the topics Physics, Physical Chemistry and Air Treatment & Technologies. All these activities include supervision of exercise/tutorial (dry) sessions, preparing and grading tests/exams as well as supervision of bachelor BSc projects.
Apart from the teaching activities, the PostDoc candidate is supposed to perform state-of-the-art research in the areas of materials science nanotechnolgies relevant to the environmental technologies. For instance, but not limited to:

- Conduct innovative research on heterostructural synthesis of 2D semiconductors including metal oxides and halcogenides for the different applications.
- Fabrication of 2D semiconductors of liquid metals.
- Fabrication nano-domains using ALD, CVD or other semi-industrial technolgies.
- Perform detailed experimental work on materials characterization of heterointerfaces targeting SEM, AFM, XPS, XRD and other materials characterization techniques.
- Collaborate on the research work with vaerious international universities within the GUGC collaboration framework.
- Publishing the research resultas in the leading scientific journals with high IF and deseminate the results obtained at the different international and national conferences.
- Mentor and supervise junior researchers and students, while assisting in teaching and development of the GUGC courses.
- Actively contribute to research team, demonstrating leadership and teamwork.
In addition, the candidate should also support the supervisor to execute of resesarch projects, apply for research grants at the national and international levels, provide support and supervision to intern/master/PhD projects, as well as support center/laboratory management and activities.
Job Qualification (Profile of the Candidate)
- Ph.D. (by October 31, 2024) in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Bioscience Engineering, Electrochemistry or Materials Science.
- Strong experimental skills in materials preparation and characterization ncluding but not limited to: SEM, AFM, XPS, XRD nad other materials characterization techniques .
- Experience with a range of electrochemical techniques for electrochemical sensors, catalysts, energy storages and other potential applications.
- Proven track record of first-author publications in reputable journals.
- Experience in supervising students and acting as a teaching assistant.
- Proficiency in English (minimum TOEFL iBT score of 80 or IELTS score of 6.5), with strong academic writing and presentation skills.
- Have an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills – GUGC’s working medium is English, working fluenthy English is a must.
- Self-motivated researcher with team spirit and leadership potential.

- Assist his/her supervisor in teaching undergraduate courses at the Ghent University Global Campus, Korea (Physics 3, Physics 4 and Air Treatment & Technologies).
- Conduct research in the area of nanostructured 2D semiconductors and their heterointerfaces for various environmental applications.
- The detailed working plan will be discussed and explored upon the background and interests of the individual candidate (e.g. supporting fellowship application, transfering technology for application and commercialization).
- To assist his/her supervisor with tasks in ongoing and future R&D projects and research-led educations (e.g. Master/Bachelor/Highschool student(s) teaching activities).
